Rajaraja Chola or Raja Kesari Varman Raja Raja Devan was one of the greatest Emperors in Indian history.  He was born in 947, the third child of Parantaka Sundara Chola and Vanavan Mahi Devi of the Velir Malayaman Dynasty. He succeeded Utama Chola to the throne in 985.  He fought the Panyas and Cherlas in 993 and destroyed the fleet in the Port of Kanalur and seized the Pandyan King, assuming the title of Mummudi Chola.  He invaded Sri Lanka in 993 and captured Udagai in 1008 and in 1010 completed the Brihadeswarar Temple.  He was succeeded by his son Rajendra Chola in 1015.
