Description
A pair of deeply beautiful Art Nouveau period moonstone earrings.Made of solid 9 carat gold, they have mismatched screw-on wires and the stones are totally natural, superbly hand shaped, rounded and polished en cabochon. With a stunning pale blue-silver hue, they have foiled backs making their lustre particularly attractive - moonstones have a quality of their own called adularescence - how the light reflects across through the stone like the moon crossing the sky.
They’re made by famed jeweller Murrle Bennett and have some character-giving battle scars, making them more charming and wearable, as we become part of their continuing history.
They date from around 1900, one is stamped 'MB & Co', one ear wire is stamped '9ct' with a hallmark, and they are in good, fully wearable condition throughout, with one replaced ear wire, the stone backings are slightly cloudy/yellowed and there's a minuscule scratch to one stone visible under magnification. Together they weigh 1.5 grams and the stones measure 7 mm in diameter. The final photo shows them with a US penny (1 cent) coin for scale, which measures 19 mm / ¾ of an inch diameter.
