Description

Hermann Von Helmholtz. Autograph letter signed by scientific pioneer, 1856, to Prof H Meyer.
von Helmholtz (1821-1896) is one of the fathers of modern science. He was a pioneering early physiologist, psychologist, and physicist. He is one of the early pioneers of physics and of visual physiology. He made seminal contributions on the anatomy and physiology of the eye, and advanced a novel and prescient theory of vision. He did pivotal work in physics, on the conservation of energy, and on thermodynamics. And he made seminal discoveries about vision. His effect on science was immense. His doctoral students included Albert Michelson and Max Planck two Nobel Prize winners. Had the Nobel Prize existed during Helmholtz’ life, he almost certainly would have won it. This is a beautiful handwritten letter by this giant of science, signed and mounted beautifully.
Over the past 45 years I have assembled a very fine collection of carefully curated, high quality, archival preserved scientific autographs and manuscripts. I acquired this magnificent letter from Webb Dordick Antiquarian Manuscripts ABAA in the 1990s and had it professionally framed with museum quality archival backing with UV protective glass. This letter dated “Bonn, 3. 3. 56” bears the bold hand written signature of von Helmholtz, lower right; this piece was professionally framed with glass on both sides; on the verso, is a hand-written inscription or address to renowned Prof. H Meyer. A long-standing minor crack in the glass verso upper left does not impinge on the inscription and can easily be replaced; I have displayed this beautiful signed letter as is in New Haven for two decades. Taking into account this minor defect in glass on-verso, this piece is offered at a discounted and very attractive price.
This magnificent piece displays beautifully. We have displayed it in our home in New Haven CT where it has been seen by young and senior scientists for nearly 30 years. We are now downsizing, and want to find the right owner for this important piece.
This museum class piece will be professionally packed and shipped via UPS or FedEx. Shipping to continental US only. Sales tax, duties, or any other costs, if any, are responsibility of the buyer. Serious offers will be considered.
