    Bought of E.G. Alden & Co., Manufactures and Dealers in Lard and Sperm Oil, and Refined Lard. E.G. Alden, S.P. Greenwood, Sam’L Samson”;
    Boston, Massachusetts; 21 March 1857. The billhead receipt is for goods purchased by the Boston & Providence Railroad. The document measures 8 1/4 x 4 5/8 inches.
    George Smith Griggs
    was the chief mechanic and locomotive designer (1834-1870) for the Boston and Providence Railroad. He designed his first locomotive in 1846 –
    Norfolk
    (4-4-0) and would go on to design and build many other locomotives and railroad cars for the Boston and Providence. He also made numerous innovations and held many patents.
    Boston and Providence Railroad
    (1834-1888) operated in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  It was one of the first railroads in the United States.
